Day 39

Everything is Going to Be Fine

Final edits were made to all I have done thus far as it is our second to last day.
Tommorow, I will be seeing what all my peers have been working on as well as presenting my own work.
I'd be lying if I didn't say i was not nervous. As i Continually practice I just have to keep telling myself...
Everything is going to be fine.

26 July 2012, Thursday

From 7:00pm to 1:00am, I continuously reviewed my presentation.

Day 38

All Is In Place

We printed our poster out today. Initially, we were a bit discouraged as there was a mistake we made; a mistake that would cost us the visibility of the entire background section. After taking this poster to out TAs and Dr. Wright, whom we met for the first time today, they gave us some very good critisism besides the obvious flaw we hadn't forseen. Apparently people dont feel obligated to read a background ground when all it contains is a list of terms. Because of this, it is usually bright to split these terms up and compose two different backgrounds. Mr Wright seemed to be an incredibly knowledgable man with an very keen sense of humor. Far from what I originally expected him to be. Every single grad student seemed to have a plethora of questions for him after his return. These grad students that I always went to for aid was their mentor. I found this amazing.
After today, our poster was done, our powerpoint was finished, and our graphs were completed.
All is in place.

Day 37

Slowly Coming Together

Today was another day for edits and correcting small details within our deliverables. Earlier, in the morning, i was editing the slides my leading Grad student, Mahdi, instructed me to. Later that day, I and Rebecca continued to work on our powerpoint in poster. Nothing special. However, there is one thing i can proudly say on this day.
The pieces are...Slowly coming together.

From 5:30pm to 9:00pm, I worked on my final deliverables along with my partner.

Day 36

The Final Week

Today was not an unusual day at all. Everything went as well, or as bad, as I anticipated it to, as there were no surprises, no disappointing, and not a thing to be excited about--things were mediocre.
I attended today's meeting, as expected. I gave my presentation to Mahdi, Charles, and Rebecca as expected. The presentation wasn't perfect, but not awful, as expected were changes to be made as expected. I made these changes, as expected. And later, I and Rebecca, worked together as we drilled our heads into the final presentation and poster as expected. We made progress, as expected. But did not complete it today, as expected.
To be completely honest, there isn't much else for us to do, rather than seize a better grasp of the concept and complete a few more minuscule edits as we strive to reach perfection. Things do not seem to be as hectic, but in no way are things slow. This is the beginning of the end of our internship.
Alas, we have become acquainted with...The final week.

Day 33

Almost Time to Depart

Today was an excellent day. A day where several things went according to plan. This was a day I can definitely say I'm proud of as things are finally looking up. A power-point presentation was given my me and my partner today: the same presentation we were originally expected to conduct on Wednesday. During this presentation, I had no exceptional flaws within it--but as always, there were a few. Later that day, I and my partner worked on our Poster together. It seems to be turning out exceptionally well as a result of my partner being so incredibly creative. That's something I've never had a skill with.
After today, i realized why everything was beginning to become so busy.
Finally, it is...Almost time to depart.

Day 32

Mission Complete

That wretched research paper was my mission for this day. Not only did I manage to complete it in a single day but edit it as well. I don't believe that I've ever come up with over 1500 words for a paper on a single day. But that only goes to show how much I had to say about my experience in this REU. It has been intense and restless at times whilst laid back and exciting at others. There was never a dull moment, and to be honest, I could have written a paper even longer than I did as a result of having so many things to share. But in the end I was able to call it and day. I could give myself a pat on the back for a job well done...
Mission Complete.

7/19/2012

19 July 2012, Thursday

From 9am to 1pm, I evaluated my time and began coming up with a paper.

From 3:00pm to 5:00pm, I worked and contemplated my poster.

From 6:00pm to 9:30pm, I completed it.

Day 31

Slightly Relieved

Today was a simple one. One that I took advantage of and completed several tasks during. Knowing that I was to give another speech over the same topic, including the types of attack edges. These attack edges are come in the forms of Silent and Active Attackers. Silent attackers are the less dangerous of the two. These attackers will drop a packet or look-up requests and return no IP whatsoever. By not returning this IP a silent attack has occurred. the other type of attacker is that of the active attacker. This type of attacker is far more malicious than the silent attacker in the case of returning thee wrong IP. These attacker nodes can return the wrong IP and compromise existing nodes in the process. I've learned enough and practiced enough to know that i was ready for my presentation.
But when I heard that we would not be giving it, I couldn't lie and tell me self that I wasn't at least ....Slightly Relieved.

Day 30

I Have To Do Better

Today was a hectic one. Maybe, I've said this before but honestly...it was. At about 11:30, i began to head to the library to remaster the powerpoint I recently had trouble with, and I must admit, I was quite proud with myself. Of course, I still have to present the powerpoint, but this should be no problem as I've practiced far more than I did before. Also, I've been drilling my head into my previous research in order to get a start on my poster that I will be uploading shortly,m within the next week. In all, i remained in the library for a minimum of 5 hours, but utilized every minute of that time effectively. After yesterday I realized that I've got to make some changes.
...I have to do better.

Day 29

I've Never Had It So Rough

Today was a frantic day. This hectic Monday, following the completely hectic week that withheld me from consistently completing my journal entries, was almost more than I could handle. Not only was I required to attend an interview for today, but also present a power-point I studied and rehearsed extensively before having to give it, during my teams meeting today. One would typically assume that after rehearsing a subject so often they would have it mastered... I definitely thought I did. But for some reason...my mind cluttered...I couldn't get a word out that I was trying too... Nothing seemed to be right. Contrary to what I believed to be true, I was completely unprepared and basically made quite a fool of myself.
This is how people learn though...I suppose.
In order to never go through anything like this embarrassment again, I'll be sure to have things alot more organized...this way... there's no way, I could ever mess up so bad again. I've always been good at speeches but this one has killed the majority of my morale.
I must admit...I've never had it so rough.

Day 19

Incredibly Exciting Opportunities

Today was another workshop in our REU program. On this day we all gathered once again to listen to several lectures having to do with graduate studies and club activities given to us by the many speakers what were invited to aid us in deciding how we might be spending our futures in our studies.
First we were informed on the many benefits we can easily detain by earning a PhD in our studies and gaining the title as Dr. Following this lecture we were introduced to several leaders of different engineering organizations such as the ASCE, SHPE, ASME, and several other exiting groups that can definitely aid us in reaching our goals of becoming great engineers in the future.
And finally we were giving lectures by our TA's and other grad students (Most in which we all work with) and how difficult grad school can actually be as well as the benefits we can gain from it.
All in all, Club activities and grad school both seem to be incredibly exciting. Later in the future, after returning to my home school. I will definitely be Looking into these...Incredibly Exciting Opportunities.

7/7/2012

7 July 2012, Friday

From 9:00am to 2:30pm I, and my fellow REU interns, participated in a very informative workshop.

Day 18

Constantly Learning

Today was a late night for me. Not only did I begin to focus on my program after 7, but I also was able to install MatLab that same night as well.
I had no clue that this program could be so incredibly useful in graphing. Amazingly enough, i prefer this graphing software far more than excel which i usually use. I've nearly mastered a new program and am quite happy with the result.
During this REU, for the most part, I seem to be...Constantly Learning.
7/6/2012

6 July 2012, Thursday

From 8:00pm to 12:00am I continued to program and learn MatLab with a bit of help.

Day 17

~!! FOURTH OF JULY !!~
~ Day-Off ~

Although it was my day off, I still worked a bit on my own..
even though we had the...Day-Off.
7/4/2012

7 July 2012, Wednesday

From 8:00pm to 9:30pm, I worked on graphs for my outputs.

Day 16

Reassurance

Today was more of a check-up than anything as far as the meeting me and my partner attended goes. After coming together at 10:00am for a small check-up on our  progress with the program, we actually ended up staying for nearly and entire 4 hours -- Just barely making lunch.
Although I didn't have much time to eat, I must admit that it was worth the hassle. My adviser's TA, Charles Gatz, taught both me and Rebecca even more about P2P systems, how they work, and several other things related to networking. One of these included how WEP encryption is incredibly easy to hack into and only takes about 15 minutes for a regular to complete. I was never aware of this as I used to use this type of security as well...but not anymore.
All in all, today was a check-up. Nothing really more than..Reassurance.
7/3/2012

3 July 2012, Tuesday

From 10:00am to 2:00pm. I attended my teams meeting.

From 8:00pm to 9:30, I worked on a copy of the kademlia program myself.

Monday, July 2, 2012

Day 15

A New Task

In today's group meeting we discussed our previous assignment that we had been working on for the weekend and why it was cancelled after only a few hours. There seemed to be several parameters that had to be fixed and even more that needed to be switched around with one another. Apparently these modifications in the program were easily above me and my partner's heads. Things we would have no hope of fixing ourselves. After all was fixed, the modified program was given to us. With this, I am running my current program in netbeans as we speak.
It's always nice to have...A new task.

2 July 2012, Monday

From 12:00pm to 2:00pm, I attended my groups meeting.

from 7:00pm to 8:00pm, I continued to work on my program.

Day 12

Quite Rewarding

My second would have to be one my favorite days thus far, throughout my experience here at the REU.
Not only was I able to complete and turn in my work and power point project from the previous day, but I was also able to give a nice report and presentation on the results I came up with through my knowledge of P2P systems. Also, I presented my first two complete and accurate graphs to my partner as well as TAs. Although I will be creating many many more graphs as this REU continues to push forward,  I still find these to graphs to be my first step into the professional world.
This internship is definitely...Quite Rewarding.
